Considered America's highest honor for a career in film, Shirley MacLaine was presented as the 40th recipient of the AFI Life Achievement Award during a Culver City, California ceremony on Thursday night (June 7).
With the American Film Institute sanctioned festivities being held at Sony Pictures Studios, 78-year-old Miss MacLaine was applauded by a star-studded crowd including everyone from young talent Dakota Fanning and Oscar-winning leading lady Meryl Streep to big screen beauties such as Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts and Katherine Heigl.
Telling THR that she passed up on offering input into the gala in her honor, Shirley said, 'I've lived my life; you interpret it.'"
Of choosing MacLaine for her work in movies, television, Broadway, author and beyond, Sir Howard Stringer, Chair of the American Film Institute's Board of Trustees, said, "Shirley MacLaine is a powerhouse of personality that has illuminated screens large and small across six decades. From ingénue to screen legend, Shirley has entertained a global audience through song, dance, laughter and tears, and her career as writer, director and producer is even further evidence of her passion for the art form and her seemingly boundless talents. There is only one Shirley MacLaine, and it is AFI's honor to present her with its 40th Life Achievement Award."
With other stars including Mena Suvari, Lea Thompson, Melanie Griffith, Charlie Day, Morgan Freeman, Marcia Gay Harden and Elizabeth McGovern also on-hand, you can catch the AFI Life Achievement Award tribute to Shirley MacLaine when it premieres on TV Land on Saturday, June 24th at 9PM ET/PST.
